As Brazil prepared for a potential bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, a passion for Para sport was already stirring in the country.

This resulted in the 2005 edition of the IWAS World Games, which attracted nearly 500 athletes competing in eight sports amongst a carnival atmosphere.

Videos from the time show national football legend Pele making an appearance at competition and support from the Sports Minister at the time.

Wheelchair fencing and wheelchair rugby made their IWAS World Games debut in Rio de Janeiro.
